Series Review: The Kingston Cycle by C.L. Polk

Greetings and welcome to Reviews That Burn: Series Reviews, part of Books That Burn. Series Reviews discuss at least three books in a series and cover the overarching themes and development of the story across several books. I'd like to thank longtime Patron Case Aiken, who receives a monthly shoutout. This episode discusses The Kingston Cycle by C. L. Polk.  Full Audio Here    In an original world reminiscent of Edwardian England in the shadow of a World War, cabals of noble families use their unique magical gifts to control the fates of nations, while one young man seeks only to live a life of his own. The war between Aeland and Laneer leaves men changed, strangers to their friends and family, but even after...

Clear Your Shit: Startled by the Wizard! (Character to Fight)

After a lot of trial and error (and wet ankles), we manage to cross the river with a series of logs, rope pullies and then giving up on all that nonsense to walk upriver and find a bridge. On the other side of the river, we run into none other than the Wizard! Great! He must have something for us. Why else would he show up completely out of nowhere? We approach him, practically skipping with excitement. Just before we can reach him however he gives a flick of his wrist and disappears in a cloud of smoke. Heather and I look at each other in stunned confusion before I feel a tug at my bag. I turn just in time to see him pull a copy of Tithe by Holly Black from my bag and disappear again. That jerk! As if things weren't hard enough. I feel the urge to punch the Wizard in his bearded face the next time we see him. I hadn't felt such an urge to deck someone since Nephamael from the book he so rudely stole.
