The Graceview Patient by Caitlin Starling

Margaret lives with a rare autoimmune condition that has destroyed her life, leaving her isolated. It has no cure, but she’s making do as best she can—until she’s offered a fully paid-for spot in an experimental medical trial at Graceview Memorial. The conditions are simple, if grueling: she will live at the hospital as a full-time patient, subjecting herself to the near-total destruction of her immune system and its subsequent regeneration. The trial will essentially kill most of, but not all of her. But as the treatment progresses and her body begins to fail, she stumbles upon something sinister living and spreading within the hospital. Unsure of what's real and what is just medication-induced delusion, Margaret struggles to find a way out as her body and mind succumb further to the darkness lurking throughout Graceview's halls. Clear Your Shit: Falling Books! (Shiny/Magical)

We watch the witch for a few more minutes as she attempts to organize the books raining from the shelves before guilt takes over. Heather and I decide to slide back out the door. At least outside we can stay covered and avoid being squashed by more falling books. In here, we're sitting ducks. I slide in front of a tall tarnished mirror just next to the door when I force shoves me back into the middle of the tower. The Wizard! He's squeezing out of the narrow reflective surface and he does not look happy. As soon as he's through he reaches out and grips the witch by her collar as she passes, completely oblivious of his presence until it's too late.

"Why couldn't you have just done as you were told! You can forget getting paid!" He looks up and mumbles a 'you too' for some reason. He's odd, I don't know.

I heft my tooth club in his direction, but he's shielding himself with the poor witch, who's eyes are still darting around taking note of the books that thump around us. Heather has her feather gripped in her hand and is brandishing it like a wand. A book, Raybearer by Jordan Ifueko, falls dangerously close to the Wizard and causes him to jump in surprise, bringing him closer to us. I smile because now it's getting serious. This jerk Wizard is going down.
