Series Review: The Kingston Cycle by C.L. Polk

Greetings and welcome to Reviews That Burn: Series Reviews, part of Books That Burn. Series Reviews discuss at least three books in a series and cover the overarching themes and development of the story across several books. I'd like to thank longtime Patron Case Aiken, who receives a monthly shoutout. This episode discusses The Kingston Cycle by C. L. Polk.  Full Audio Here    In an original world reminiscent of Edwardian England in the shadow of a World War, cabals of noble families use their unique magical gifts to control the fates of nations, while one young man seeks only to live a life of his own. Magic marked Miles Singer for suffering the day he was born, doomed either to be enslaved to his family's interest or to be committed to a witches' asylum. The war between Aeland and Laneer leaves men changed, strangers to their friends and family, but even after...

Clear Your Shit: Falling Books! (Shiny/Magical)

We watch the witch for a few more minutes as she attempts to organize the books raining from the shelves before guilt takes over. Heather and I decide to slide back out the door. At least outside we can stay covered and avoid being squashed by more falling books. In here, we're sitting ducks. I slide in front of a tall tarnished mirror just next to the door when I force shoves me back into the middle of the tower. The Wizard! He's squeezing out of the narrow reflective surface and he does not look happy. As soon as he's through he reaches out and grips the witch by her collar as she passes, completely oblivious of his presence until it's too late.

"Why couldn't you have just done as you were told! You can forget getting paid!" He looks up and mumbles a 'you too' for some reason. He's odd, I don't know.

I heft my tooth club in his direction, but he's shielding himself with the poor witch, who's eyes are still darting around taking note of the books that thump around us. Heather has her feather gripped in her hand and is brandishing it like a wand. A book, Raybearer by Jordan Ifueko, falls dangerously close to the Wizard and causes him to jump in surprise, bringing him closer to us. I smile because now it's getting serious. This jerk Wizard is going down.
