October Daye / Inheritance - Essay Series Part Five: Long Series and How to Read Them

Hello Patrons and general audience members! Welcome to another Books That Burn essay by Robin. Thank you to Case Aiken, who receives a monthly Patron shoutout. [Full Audio Available Here] This is the fifth and final entry in a five-part essay series discussing two long-running book series by queer authors: October Daye by Seanan McGuire, and Inheritance by A.K. Faulkner. I chose these series because I love them both, they were intended from the start to be long series, neither of them are finished yet, and the authors have different structural approaches to developing each series across so many volumes. Purely coincidentally, they are both long-running contemporary fantasy series mainly set in California in or near the 2010's, with major characters named Quentin, and whose fast-healing protagonists have a tendency to quasi-adopt a gaggle of magical teenagers. Evelyn and her siblings spent several years in the Woodlands before returning home to the instant they left, in a WWII bomb shelter. Now, five years later, Evelyn still can't move on because a Woodlands heart always finds its way home. Told in First Person with Dual POVs.

REALM BREAKER by Victoria Aveyard, book 1 of Realm Breaker is Fantasy marketed as Young Adult. Corayne ends up on a quest with an unlikely band of companions to save the realm. Told in Third Person with Ensemble POVs.

THE RING OF SOLOMON by Jonathan Stroud, book 0.5 of Bartimaeus is Fantasy marketed as Childrens. Bartimaeus helps a magician try to steal King Solomon's ring. Told in First/Third Person with Ensemble POVs.

No Review (Nonfiction, Graphic Novels, etc.)

I started reading the manga series, TO YOUR ETERNITY and finished the first two volumes. I also resumed a long-languishing re-read of the manga series DEATH NOTE.

Rereads and Older Reviews

I'm re-reading The Machineries of Empire by Yoon Ha Lee, I finished the first two books and have started on the third. This time I'm reading them as audiobooks and they're excellent.

Current Reads

I just started REVENANT GUN by Yoon Ha Lee, as mentioned above. I'm partway through re-reads of KING OF THE RISING by Kacen Callender and HARROW THE NINTH by Tamsyn Muir. I'm still working on my ARC of SHE IS A HAUNTING by Trang Thanh Tran.
