We've Always Been Queer

The podcast is Books That Burn because the original idea was "books that burn you", discussing fictional depictions of trauma. It's also an intentional reminder of the pile of burning books, you know the photo I mean, the one from WWII. It's a pile of books about queerness, gender, and sexuality. It also helped the community with addiction treatment and contraception. It wasn't perfect and some of the ideas they had seem out of date now, the ones we know about anyway. But they were trying to make queer people's lives better, and they were a community resource at a time when people really needed it. Which is all the time, we always need these accesses. And the Nazis burned the whole library. It took days, they had to drag the books ou

DNFs

I tried reading THE FIRST BINDING by R.R. Virdi and BEFORE I LET GO by Marieke Nijkamp, but I didn't like the narrator for the first and was too stressed out by the second.
I wrote a formal DNF review for THE FERRYMAN by Justin Cronin, received as an ARC through NetGalley. I was very frustrated and so that explanation is a bit more flowery than usual.

Rereads and Older Reviews

I've been re-reading a bunch of gay arranged relationship stories, since that's a subgenre I enjoy. To that end I read A STRANGE AND STUBBORN ENDURANCE by Foz Meadows, then followed it up with two books by Everina Maxwell, WINTER'S ORBIT and OCEAN'S ECHO.

BTB 2023 Reading Challenge

For 2023 I'm hosting a reading challenge that lasts the whole year. February's prompt is to read something with snow as a theme (or with a white cover). Our patrons voted for YEAR ONE by Nora Roberts.

Current Reads

I'm still working on re-reads of HARROW THE NINTH and THE DREAM THIEVES. I also started a re-read of NINEFOX GAMBIT by Yoon Ha Lee, this time by audiobook so I can sew at the same time.
A RESTLESS TRUTH by Freya Marske has returned from the library and I'll finish that soon. I saw that the third book in the trilogy should come out this fall and I'm very excited.
I'm working on an ARC of SHE IS A HAUNTING by Trang Thanh Tran. I need to either speed up or accept that I won't finish it before the publishing date.

In Case You Missed It

This time last year I read THE WALL OF STORMS by Ken Liu, the second book in a "silkpunk" fantasy series.
